Chief Information Officer

JD D
In his role as Chief Information Officer (CIO), JD partners with business stakeholders on the strategic technology roadmap and options for innovation aligning with Medxcel’s goals and objectives. His Information Technology (IT) team provides an agile cohesive portfolio of technology solutions to meet the needs of Medxcel, our clients, and changing market conditions.
“Our team is responsible for providing solutions that enhance process efficiency and effectiveness, giving our associates the tools and information they need to deliver quality services to the clients and patients we are called to serve every day.”

Talk about your role and the responsibilities of your IT team.
I’m a member of Medxcel’s senior leadership team in charge of the information technology strategic roadmap, solutions architecture, services, and IT support. My team is comprised of two groups. Our application team supports business solutions for all departments within Medxcel. Our data and development team is responsible for all things data. We collect data into the enterprise data lake where it is organized for use by the Business Insights team who creates reports and dashboards using Power BI that can be used by the business for analysis, strategic planning, and informed decision making. We also partner with the Medxcel Client Solution Center and client information technology teams to provide end-to-end services for associates. Overall, our team is responsible for providing solutions that enhance process efficiency and effectiveness, giving our associates the tools and information they need to deliver quality services to the clients and patients we are called to serve every day.

Describe your career path and how you arrived in this role.
My career began in the manufacturing and global pharmaceuticals industries before I moved into healthcare, joining the technology services department of a national healthcare system. I am passionate about creating high performing teams that actively engage the business to achieve valued outcomes. I have extensive experience with global service delivery and large digital transformation projects in complex organizations. In 2016, was offered the opportunity to join the Medxcel leadership team as the CIO and have enjoyed working with the amazing people here.

What opportunities for training and development does Medxcel provide?
Having the opportunity to get out and learn alongside associates from other areas of our business has had a positive impact on me and my team. There is a real value in sitting with or shadowing our associates on the job to learn how what we do impacts them and how we can use technology solutions to make their job easier and more efficient. Medxcel has provided our team with opportunities to learn all aspects of the business by directly engaging with associates who are serving our customers in the field as well as at the corporate office. In the field of technology, it’s important to have a continuous learning mindset to keep up with changes in technology, new innovations, and industry trends. Our IT associates attend vendor conferences, training programs, and pursue technical certifications. Those who attend conferences or training courses bring that knowledge back to the group so that everyone can benefit and grow.

How do you describe the culture at Medxcel?
The culture at Medxcel is very people focused. We have a highly engaged workforce that is passionate about serving our customers. Our associates are passionate about serving our customers and we all align around our common values, goals, partners, and valued outcomes as we support healthcare delivery in communities around the United States.  Medxcel supports this culture by investing in associates who are proud to serve and work at Medxcel. We all spend a great amount of our time at work, and it’s important that we can come together in a workplace where we interact positively with one another and rally behind a single goal of delivering quality outcomes for the patients our customers serve.

What is the best part of your job.
The best part of my job is collaborating with others on our strategic initiatives. Together as a group we can really be forward-thinking and generate great ideas about the future of our business instead of just talking about what we need to accomplish today. I love how our team can work alongside our associates in other areas of the business, providing us with ideas for improvement. Perhaps we saw someone click through something 17 times to do a task, that makes us question how we can reduce that task to two clicks. How can we use technology solutions to shave time off tasks and make it easier for everyone to accomplish their work? Those moments are very gratifying to me.

What’s one thing you’ve learned in your role that you didn’t expect?
I’ve learned that there is so much more than I initially realized about what it takes for Medxcel to deliver service. We have experts in planning, design and construction, environmental stewardship and so much more. As a result, Medxcel has an incredible amount of data that we generate and collect as we provide services to customers, more than I ever expected.  Our team can really make a positive impact through our ability to capture and organize data analytics in a meaningful way with reports and dashboards, enabling others to make value-added decisions to improve business efficiency and the services we provide to our clients.

What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?
Culture and people are the key differentiators at Medxcel. A lot of companies say that, but at Medxcel we really mean it and it is evident in the ways our associates deliver high quality services to our customers every day. Anyone considering a job here should be prepared for a highly collaborative and supportive workplace. There’s a lot of trust and collaboration here, and it’s great coming to work knowing that the company and your fellow associates have your back and will support you.

Safety is huge for patients. You never want anyone to go home sicker than they came into our facilities. We can’t do anything about what brought them to the hospital, but we don’t want their condition to worsen because of our buildings, or because the air pressure is wrong, or because there was a fire, for example. They shouldn’t have to worry about water systems, temperature, humidity, none of those things should be on their minds.
