What is your role at Medxcel?
I lead a building automation team, which is responsible for the maintenance, installation, repairs, testing and inspections of building automation systems at client healthcare facilities. The work we do supports energy efficiency, and we also help keep facilities compliant with regulatory requirements. I have an electrical license and a mechanical license, and I get to use both in this role, which falls right between the two trades.
Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.
I got an associate degree in industrial electrical technology at the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology (OSUIT), and a few years later returned and got a second degree in HVAC technology. I worked for electrical contractors for nearly a dozen years, and also served as mechanical supervisor at OSUIT. Throughout my experience, I secured various professional licenses: electrical, contractor license, and mechanical contractor license..
Before coming to Medxcel, I was working a lot of nights and weekends and was searching for better work/life balance. That’s how I ended up here. I filled out an application and Medxcel called me a few hours later. I started as an electrician, and I’ve been promoted several times in just five years.
Can you speak to the training and development opportunities that Medxcel offers?
Our team receives a lot of training. We’re trying to get to the point where we’re not dependent on external contractors for anything so it’s important that we become as skilled on the equipment as possible. As issues arise that impact the systems we oversee, we want to resolve them ourselves.
How does Medxcel support your personal wellbeing?
The hours were terrible at my last job. At Medxcel, the hours have been great, and being on call here is much easier to deal with because we have more support — we have plumbers, electricians, extractors, every type of expertise you need. If you get tied up, you can call for help.
What is the best part of your job?
I appreciate the mission and values we have here, and our focus on serving our community. Altogether, it gives us a stronger reason to come to work versus just showing up to make a living. I also enjoy the people I work with. A lot of smart and dedicated people work here, and they’re all easy to get along with.
How would you describe the culture at Medxcel?
There’s a real sense of family here. The culture is good, and we really care about one another.
How does you work, or the work of your team, impact patient care?
Patient care is what it’s all about. My wife is a nurse practitioner, and she cares for her patients the way she would want her family to be cared for. I also want to use my skills to help patients feel comfortable as they heal, which is what I would want for my own family.
The other day, I talked to a lady who felt cold even though the temperature was 70 degrees in the space. I told her I didn’t want her to feel cold and would make adjustments, then check back on how she was feeling. Taking the time to communicate and show people you care goes a long way. At the end of the day, it’s really about people.
What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?
I’ve recommended Medxcel to several people. Working with good people and feeling good about your job is a huge deal. It’s about being part of something bigger than yourself, being there for one another, and working together to accomplish our mission.
