Tell us about your role as IT Analyst.
I’m responsible for working on the application platforms within Medxcel’s technology portfolio. Whether it’s enhancements or troubleshooting, I ensure these applications meet business needs and have positive user experience. My role is focused on the field services platform, which our operations teams use to view and respond to facility maintenance work orders. Reliable software performance is critical to avoid disruptions for our on-site teams and ensure timely service for clients. To aid this, I recently developed inspection templates as a safeguard to ensure the system continually functions as it should. I find that my day-to-day responsibilities vary because we’ll have critical issues that pop up needing quick resolution, but there is a lot of project work and production support happening behind the scenes too.
What path did you take to arrive in your current role?
I graduated with a degree in health administration, with the goal of being in a leadership position. Realizing that I wanted to help other people by working in a hospital, I went back to school and became a respiratory therapist. I loved the job, but the hours required were brutal, and I needed a better work-life balance. I found that balance by shifting into facility operations at the hospital. That team eventually transitioned to Medxcel, and I made the move to their corporate office in a remote IT position. Over the course of nine years, I worked my way up from technician to supervisor of the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) support team. The supervisor role really aligned with my desire to lead an IT team, and I enjoyed that challenge. About a year ago, I was approached with the opportunity to become an IT Analyst. With that I transitioned back into an individual contributor role, which has been a great fit for me.
How does your team collaborate with other areas within Medxcel?
We often work with the training and compliance support teams, addressing their requests that come through the project management team. I’ll gather the requirements, brainstorm, and develop an optimal solution for all stakeholders. Recently I was asked to visit the hospital where I used to work and provide technical support for their on-site facilities team. Communicating effectively with operations teams is learned through experience, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have that.
What is the best part of your job?
We have a great team, and there’s always something new to learn from them. I find it really rewarding to solve problems and be an integral part of the resolution. The work we do helps make others’ jobs easier.
How does your work impact patient care?
Our team indirectly impacts patient care. We improve the applications and processes that operations teams use to facilitate the care of patients.
What career development opportunities has Medxcel provided you?
I’ve taken advantage of many of them, like obtaining my SQL certification through a local university with Medxcel reimbursing me for that. I also completed an ITIL certification. Our IT department offers programs like Microsoft Learn. It’s a learning path to take courses, and Medxcel reimburses you after taking the test or getting certified. There’s been several training courses with opportunities to collaborate with other leaders, sharing ideas and further developing our skills. I’ve even taken part in a book club where we read a leadership book and met to talk through why certain scenarios would or wouldn’t work.
How would you describe the Medxcel culture?
We are driven to do work that helps others, whether from the office or within the hospital. Medxcel’s Common Purpose is supporting life’s moments. We help operations and clinical teams so they can focus on what matters most: caring for patients. My passion for healthcare comes from that desire to help other people.
How does Medxcel support your personal well-being?
The PTO is very generous, which I appreciate. Medxcel encourages a good work-life balance. Leaders are supportive and trust their associates. My leader recognizes that family circumstances will happen, and I may need to reschedule a meeting or take a day off. Everyone on our team is understanding during these times and will pick up where I left off. That level of support means a lot.
How do you feel Medxcel impacts the communities we serve?
Medxcel is passionate about giving back to the community, and we’re given volunteer PTO hours to use for community service.
Is there something you’ve learned on the job that you didn’t expect?
The amount of collaboration it takes to deliver a solution is probably the biggest eye opener in my current role, because I can’t just go from A to Z. I was naïve to this when I was on the clinical or operations side, wondering why we can’t just change something right away. But now, looking under the hood of the machine so to speak, I understand the process and why all scenarios must be weighed and tested prior to implementing a solution.
What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?
I believe in Medxcel’s mission and what we do here. There’s a lot of opportunities to grow if you’re driven. For example, I started as a technician and advanced to where I am today. You just get in there and start working toward building the curve. Medxcel posts job openings and encourages internal promotions when possible. With the development and training that’s offered here, there are plenty of chances for advancement in your career.
