Tell us about your role as AP Specialist.
I process invoice exceptions for many different facilities. If something is preventing an invoice from being processed, such as a data discrepancy or other anomaly, it is submitted into my queue. I’ll investigate the issue and figure out how we can resolve it. Throughout the years, I’ve been able to expand my role to include other invoice processing and partnering with facilities teams in our client hospitals.
What path did you take to arrive in your current role?
I have experience in healthcare within my previous roles. I worked for our parent company as an open enrollment specialist. Once that enrollment period was completed. I took a position in their contact center; handling patient and internal calls related to administrative and operational services. While working in the contact center, I became aware of the need for AP specialists to process invoices. I decided to make the move into accounts payable. In that role is where I was first introduced to Medxcel and have been here for over five years.
What is the best part of your job?
My interactions with coworkers and the field are the best part of my job, and I’ve formed some great relationships. Company events allow us to sit down with people we might never have met, find out their background, and what they do. Even if you’ve communicated through email, getting to connect with someone in person helps develop those professional relationships. It’s great when you’re able to put a face to the name and have that familiarity.
How does your work impact patient care?
There are emergency situations where a critical need could hinder patient care if not resolved. Our team ensures invoices are paid quickly so there’s no delay in the vendor’s completion of work. Our clients see Medxcel’s dedication to uninterrupted service and helping patients get what they need.
How does your team collaborate with other areas within Medxcel?
I work with the facilities teams in several of our hospitals and submit a weekly report to facility coordinators in each region to keep them up to date on invoice statuses. Our team also works with the purchasing and supply chain team as they create POs, as well as the accounts receivable team. We’re all aligned to resolve any invoicing concern before it becomes an issue in the facilities.
What career development opportunities has Medxcel provided you?
Medxcel University has online resources to build skills in areas such as Microsoft Excel, which I found helpful. I was also given the opportunity to shadow a facilities coordinator at a local hospital, seeing day-to-day activities like how he would create a purchase requisition at his site. Shadowing team members at the facility allows us to refine procedures, communicate better across teams, and improve efficiency on all sides.
How does Medxcel support your personal well-being?
There is a good work-life balance at Medxcel. If you have an emergency or health issue, this company is very helpful and generous, going above and beyond to help you in those situations.
How do you feel Medxcel impacts the communities we serve?
I’ve volunteered a few times with Medxcel at the Arthur and Ruth Browne St. Vincent House, a temporary home for patients who come a long distance to receive care in Indianapolis. Our company is also participating in the Indianapolis Heart Walk, which raises awareness and funds for the American Heart Association.
I’ve found through volunteering that when you brighten someone’s spirit who may be going through a tough time, they can then pass it along to the next person. These events help our community get the services they need, from raising money to prevent heart disease or donating to a toy drive for a family who may not have enough during the holidays. A small act of kindness can mean the world to someone.
How would you describe the Medxcel culture?
Helping others is part of Medxcel’s brand, and I really admire the company for that. I like helping with the charities that our organization supports.
Is there something you’ve learned on the job that you didn’t expect?
I was surprised to learn about the business aspect behind healthcare. Working at the corporate office and seeing how all parts of a hospital come together was eye-opening to me, especially understanding the administrative side of healthcare. There are so many inner workings that go far beyond what the patient sees.
What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?
Medxcel is a great place to learn, no matter what you want to do. If you want to stay within your educational skillset and your field, you will learn a lot here. If you decide to branch off into a new career path, you will still learn a lot and gain the skills to excel at that job.
